  A brief history of me

I'm Adya, and I am a British Canoeing paddlesports coach and founder of People of Colour Paddle.

I sincerely believe that coaching isn't just for professional athletes and that we can become better, more efficient and injury free paddlers with the power of proper coaching. My coaching philosophy is firmly centred around empowerment, so if I'm coaching you will very rarely hear me speak more than learners.  In April 2022 I started "People of Colour Paddle" with the aim of introducing paddlesports to more black and brown folks in the UK, getting them to fall in love with it and increasing representation for people like me in leadership roles within paddlesport.

I started kayaking in the summer 2014 in Stockholm, Sweden at the age of 27, after having done absolutely no sport growing up. Paddling the great lakes and seas of Sweden, I quickly got used to travelling long distances by kayak. I've been kayaking and canoeing in the UK since 2015 and slowly navigating my way through various qualifications set by British Canoeing (BC).

Managing a full time job and paddling can sometimes be quite tricky. Through this blog, I'm hoping to share my experience of managing time, managing expectations, provide handy tips for beginners or advanced paddlers. Sometimes we are our own worst critic!

I started paddleboarding in 2019 after a sea kayak coach told me I wasn't strong or confident enough to progress in my kayaking. I thought about giving up kayaking but my love for the water drew me to paddleboarding. Paddleboarding has given me back my water confidence and its definitely harder than it looks!
